It used to be in the old days that everyone would want to wear that Matchy-Matchy style of clothes for their portraits. Now a days, it just looks a bit dated and contrived. Today, we recommend a mixture of like colors and palettes that are neutral. Also, having colors that match the season. For formal portraits in the studio, suits and dresses work well. Black always is classic. Christmas, red dresses or accessories with black and hints of green for the girls. Black suits or tuxedos for the guys. For fall portraits, dark colors as in navy and grey and blacks are timeless and a combination of browns and creams. Spring portraits work best with pastels and light colors.
Coordination is key, choose a color palette that each person can make unique with variations of texture and style, accessories, or a subtle pattern. But be careful of patterns, if it is too loud, that person will pull focus in the portrait.
Don’t forget to keep in mind where your session is being photographed. Choosing clothing that fits the mood of your location helps maintain a feeling of fluidity.
Main thing is that you dress that style that is you. If you have never worn a tux or ball gown, it pretty well means that you will not be recognized by your audience.
